COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY
As a high school journalist, the commitment to diversity is not just a professional obligation but a moral imperative that shapes the very essence of journalistic integrity. In a world filled with varied cultures and experiences it is vital to ensure that our reporting and writing reflects all of our readers. By covering people of diverse backgrounds we not only reflect the reality of the world we live in, but also contribute to breaking down stereotypes and fostering a deeper understanding among our readership. Take a look below to read some of work I've done that represents my commitment to diversity as a high school journalist.
DIVERSITY IN-DEPTH
Amidst crafting the second issue of the 2022-2023 Catalyst newspaper our staff collectively decided to contribute our in-depth to Diversity. After seeing our schools' Black History Month displays throughout the hallways and addition of the first-year English Learners Program we knew it was important to cover these valuable topics in our paper. By doing so, we brought awareness to the underrepresented communities within our school. Alongside our in-depth spread I designed a graphic for our cover containing a variety of people from different backgrounds and cultures, reflecting our in-depth coverage.

NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE
MONTH
In November, a display caught my attention in the hall, filled with a variety of photos, statistics, testimonials and a bold title: "Native American Heritage Month." Observing the dedication and effort put forth by our school's Justice and Diversity League in creating this display, I felt compelled to shed light on the students' commitment to raising awareness about the injustices surrounding missing and murdered indigenous women. Through their informative display I was able to learn more about Native American culture and injustices, and create a well-rounded news story that informed our readers about the importance of Native American Heritage Month. CULMINATION OF CULTURE
Amidst Thanksgiving, our administrators and faculty held a dinner for all of the students a part of the English Learners Program(EL). Students from across the world were given the opportunity to partake in the American tradition that is Thanksgiving. While, the traditional turkey and cranberry sauce were provided, there were a few dishes on the table that you normally wouldn't see at your traditional Thanksgiving meal. Students apart of the EL program brought traditional meals from their culture to share with the class. Getting to cover these students and learn more about their culture and stories was an unforgettable experience. To read the story click the photo to the left.
UNIFIED IN-DEPTH

In the middle of crafting the first edition of our Volume 7 newspaper we decided to last minute change our in-depth on school spirit to an in-depth on the full length unified musical: Frozen. The ground-breaking performance marked a triumph as our school was the only in the state to receive the full rights to the musical. Getting to cover the alternative curricular program students who brought this show to life was a full-filling experience for me as a high school journalist and it was exhilarating telling their stories both on stage and behind the scenes. Through interviews, photos, graphics and news reports we were able to bring this monumental achievement onto our platform and showcase the marvel that these students produced.

STALKER LIST

In both Yearbook and Journalism we utilize a roster containing all of the students in our school in order to cover a wide-variety of students. Anytime someone is covered in the Prowler yearbook we mark the page they have already been featured on and make sure they do not exceed more than three pages. This practice aims to prevent the over-utilization of specific students, ensuring that everyone has a chance to have their story told. In our classes, we often emphasize the mantra, "everyone has a story." Actively seeking out students we are unfamiliar with allows us to explore diverse stories, expanding the potential for coverage in our publication.
